They traded out of Round 1—and still took their guy

San Francisco entered the 2026 draft at No. 27, traded back twice and opened Day 2 by taking Ole Miss receiver De’Zhaun Stribling at No. 33. That move will be judged every Sunday. Stribling is 6-foot-2, 207 pounds, ran a 4.36-second 40 and produced 811 yards with six touchdowns in his final college season. The 49ers believe they added size, physicality and real chunk-play speed while also collecting extra picks.

The rest of the class tells us what bothered the front office: defensive linemen Romello Height and Gracen Halton add fresh pressure, Kaelon Black gives Christian McCaffrey help, and the club stocked developmental depth across the line and secondary. This was not a glamour-only draft. It was an attempt to make a battered contender deeper.

The injury list is already part of the plot

George Kittle opened camp on the PUP list while recovering from an Achilles injury. Isaac Guerendo, Mykel Williams and Alfred Collins joined him. Brandon Aiyuk is not on the 90-man roster and remains on the Left Squad list. The more encouraging news: Nick Bosa and Fred Warner were cleared to begin camp, even with Bosa being brought along gradually after his ACL recovery.

That is the real 2026 tension. San Francisco won 12 games and a road playoff game in Philadelphia last season, then got flattened 41–6 in Seattle. The ceiling is still contender-high, but only if enough of the core arrives healthy at the same time.

Kyle Shanahan’s own recovery adds another wrinkle. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster is carrying broader camp responsibility, Klay Kubiak is handling practice play-calling and the staff is treating the absence collectively. For a team that normally sells continuity as an advantage, this camp is testing how deeply the system really runs. It is one more reason the early practices matter beyond ordinary depth-chart gossip.

New defense, absurd travel

New defensive coordinator Raheem Morris is already showing five-man fronts and more flexibility. The defensive line added Osa Odighizuwa plus two drafted linemen because the organization openly admitted the group was not good enough last year. That honesty matters.

Then there is the schedule: the Rams in Melbourne for Week 1, Minnesota in Mexico City later, and the league’s heaviest travel burden. It sounds glamorous until a recovering Kittle has to manage an Australia opener and the team has to keep its legs into December.

The divisional opener adds a personal edge. Los Angeles is not merely a neutral opponent chosen for an international showcase; it is a rival that spent aggressively on defense and came within four points of the Super Bowl. San Francisco will learn immediately whether its reshaped front and new receiver are ready for contender football.

What we are watching

Can Stribling become a meaningful target immediately? Can Morris make the front disruptive again? Can Bosa stay on the field? And can the 49ers stop letting the injury report write the ending?

The 49ers socks: Faithful color with official approval

At iHeartSocks, we picked the San Francisco 49ers 4 Stripe Deuce because this unpredictable season needs fan gear that can stay in the weekly rotation. The red, gold and white crew design works at Levi’s Stadium, an international-game watch party, school, travel or a casual Friday. It is unmistakably for the Faithful without requiring a full jersey.
