Matthew Stafford did not leave anyone guessing. After winning the 2025 MVP with league highs of 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns, he announced that he would return for an 18th NFL season. Training camp immediately showed why the Rams still belong in the NFC title conversation: Stafford looked sharp finding Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, while Sean McVay continued managing the veteran’s workload deliberately.
The urgency is obvious. Los Angeles scored 518 points last season, reached the NFC Championship Game and lost 31–27 to Seattle. This is not a roster hoping to become respectable. It is a roster trying to squeeze one more parade out of Stafford’s remarkable late-career peak.
Ty Simpson makes the future impossible to ignore
Then Les Snead made the draft spicy. The Rams used the No. 13 overall pick on Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, who threw for 3,567 yards with 28 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2025. Simpson gets to learn from Stafford and McVay instead of being thrown into the fire—but spending premium capital on him creates a fascinating countdown behind every Stafford start.
That was only part of the aggression. Los Angeles traded its original first-rounder in a package for elite cornerback Trent McDuffie and added Jaylen Watson to rebuild the secondary. First-year Rams pass rusher Myles Garrett was already taking team-drill reps at camp. This front office is not whispering about a championship window; it is kicking the door.
And yes, Aaron Donald might really be considering it
The wildest storyline is the one nobody expected to be active again. McVay confirmed that retired Rams legend Aaron Donald is putting himself through a strict process to decide whether to return in 2026. Until Donald makes that call, fans are allowed to imagine him lining up with Garrett and Jared Verse. That front would be outrageous. It also must remain an exciting possibility, not a fact, until Donald decides.
Donald’s choice would affect more than snaps. His return would change protections, accelerate the development of every young defender and make SoFi feel like a reunion tour with championship stakes. A no would not make the defense ordinary—Garrett, Verse and a reconstructed secondary already carry serious expectations—but it would leave the current group responsible for building its own identity instead of borrowing the legend’s.
The question that decides everything
Can the Rams keep Stafford upright and fresh enough for January? Nacua, Adams and Kyren Williams give McVay answers everywhere, while McDuffie and Garrett raise the defensive ceiling. But the NFC West offers no relaxing weeks, starting with San Francisco in Melbourne and eventually circling back to the Seattle team that ended last season.
Simpson’s preseason work will also be appointment viewing. Every good rep will excite fans about life after Stafford; every rough one will remind everyone how difficult quarterback succession really is. The healthiest outcome is the boring one: Stafford stays brilliant, Simpson develops without urgency and the debate can wait until another offseason.
